Speeding fine bands
If a speeding case goes to a magistrates' court, the fine depends on how far over the limit you were. The Sentencing Council sets three bands, each a percentage of your relevant weekly income (take-home pay).
| Speed limit | Band A | Band B | Band C |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 mph | 21 to 30 | 31 to 40 | 41 and above |
| 30 mph | 31 to 40 | 41 to 50 | 51 and above |
| 40 mph | 41 to 55 | 56 to 65 | 66 and above |
| 50 mph | 51 to 65 | 66 to 75 | 76 and above |
| 60 mph | 61 to 80 | 81 to 90 | 91 and above |
| 70 mph | 71 to 90 | 91 to 100 | 101 and above |
| Fine | 25 to 75% of weekly income | 75 to 125% | 125 to 175% |
| Starting point | 50% | 100% | 150% |
| Points or ban | 3 points | 4 to 6 points, or 7 to 28 day ban | 6 points, or 7 to 56 day ban |
The maximum fine is £1,000, or £2,500 on a motorway. A court will usually take a third off for an early guilty plea.
Fixed penalty, course or court?
- Speed awareness course. For minor offences, police often offer a course instead, if you have not done one in the last three years. It costs about £85 to £110 and means no points.
- Fixed penalty notice. A £100 fine and 3 points, with no court hearing.
- Court. For higher speeds, or if you challenge the notice, the bands above apply, plus a victim surcharge (40% of the fine) and prosecution costs, often £90 or more.
New drivers and the 6 point rule
If you get 6 or more points within two years of passing your test, your licence is revoked and you have to apply for a provisional licence and pass the theory and practical tests again. Two fixed penalties are enough.
12 points and totting up
Anyone who reaches 12 points within three years can be banned for at least six months under the totting-up rules. Points stay on your licence for four years from the date of the offence.
