How the estimate works

We apply typical UK depreciation rates year by year from the new price, then adjust for mileage against an average of about 8,000 miles a year and for condition. It gives a sensible range for a private sale. Dealer part-exchange offers are usually 10 to 20% lower, and online car-buying services vary.

What affects your car's value

  • Age and mileage: the biggest factors. High mileage cuts value; low mileage for the age adds to it.
  • Service history and MOT record: a full history and a clean MOT record give buyers confidence.
  • Demand for the model: popular, reliable models in short supply hold value best.
  • Condition: dents, kerbed wheels and worn interiors all reduce the price.
  • ULEZ and clean air zone compliance: older diesels are worth less near London and other zone cities.

Getting the best price

  • Get several instant offers. They cost nothing and set a floor.
  • Fix small faults and clean the car well before photos.
  • Have the V5C, service book and MOT history ready. See our V5C guide.

Questions

How do I find out what my car is worth?

Start with an estimate like this one, then compare advertised prices for the same model, age and mileage, and get a few instant offers.

How much does mileage affect a car's value?

A lot. As a rough guide, each 10,000 miles above average for its age can take around 5% off the value.

Is this an exact valuation?

No. It is an estimate from typical depreciation, not data for your exact model.
