What the check shows
- The categories of vehicle you can drive, such as B for cars and BE for towing.
- Penalty points (endorsements), with the offence code, date and when they expire.
- Any disqualifications.
- When your photocard licence expires. Photocards need renewing every 10 years.
How to check
- Go to the GOV.UK "View or share your driving licence information" service.
- Enter your driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode on your licence.
- View your details, or choose "Get a code" to create a share code.
If you do not have a National Insurance number, you can check by phone with DVLA.
Share codes for car hire and employers
Many car hire companies, especially abroad, ask for a share code. It lets them see your record without seeing your other personal details. A code lasts 21 days and can be used more than once in that time. You can cancel it at any time. Give the company the code together with the last 8 characters of your licence number.
Points on your licence
Most points stay on your record for 4 years and count towards a ban for 3. Read penalty points explained for the details, including the 6-point rule for new drivers. For a speeding offence, the speeding fine calculator shows the likely outcome.
Updating your licence
You must tell DVLA if you change your name or address, and update your photo when your photocard expires. Driving with an out-of-date address on your licence can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
